I say many things about Prithviraj - he’s handsome, a superstar, an incredibly thoughtful and articulate speaker, a true cinema lover and a gem of the Malayalam film industry. I cannot imagine another actress portraying the layers ofĭefiance, sacrifice, loyalty, patience, frustration, undying hope and absolute devastation that she plays at different points. We talk a lot about his genius but I’m not sure if I’ve ever felt and understood the depth of any cinematographer’s genius as keenly as I did his in this film. John didn’t get the National Award for cinematography for Ennu Ninte Moideen.

I cannot get the images of this film out of my mind.

It’s just really undignified and disrespectful to the actual living woman the story is about. While I still think it’s crazy ridiculous to remake a real life story by changing the land and language it took place in, I can see why the producers want to get an even greater return on their sizable investment by remaking the story in Tamil. Every single element has been so well thought out and the generous producers have truly allowed R.S. I saw a show early Sunday morning when all the Malayali Christians in the area were in church so I didn’t see the final applause Midukki wrote about (I did see it for How Old Are You? tho so I understand the vibe) but this film is truly a masterpiece and it’s been purposefully constructed to be a masterpiece. Kanchana’s father here is a loving man whose wishes and authority is secondary to her uncle’s and brother’s, which seemed pretty period accurate to me. Along with quality, Malayalam cinema lost the ability to portray matrilineality completely in the late 90s-early 2000s, and before that, the brothers-in-law who came into the families were portrayed as leeches for reasons that a lot of academics have written about and I won’t bore you with. I saw Ennu Ninte Moideen this weekend and I need to start off by saying how much I appreciate the accurate portrayal of a matrilineal (Nair, I assumed) family in Malayalam cinema after a very long time.
